  34.      Sucralfate should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  35. container.
  36.  
  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      Sucralfate is used for the short-term treatment of ulcers.  This
  40. medication binds to the surface of the ulcer, thereby protecting it from
  41. stomach acid and promoting healing.
  42.  
  43. TREATMENT
  44.  
  45.      In order to obtain maximum benefit from this drug, you should swallow it
  46. whole with a full glass of water.  Take it on an empty stomach one hour before
  47. or two hours after a meal and at bedtime.  Do not take antacids within 30
  48. minutes before or one hour after taking sucralfate.
  49.      Continue to take sucralfate for the full length of time prescribed by
  50. your doctor, even if your symptoms disappear.  Your ulcer may not yet be
  51. healed.  However, do not take it for more than eight weeks without your
  52. doctor's authorization.
  53.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  54. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  55. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  56. not double the next dose.
  57.  
  58. SIDE EFFECTS
  59.  
  60.      Minor.
  61.  
  62.      Back pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth,
  63. indigestion, nausea, or stomach pain.  These side effects should disappear as
  64. your body adjusts to the medication.
  65.      To relieve constipation, exercise and drink more water (unless your
  66. doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  67.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  68. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  69.      To relieve mouth dryness, chew sugarless gum or suck on ice chips or a
  70. piece of hard candy.

  72.      Major.

  74.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  75. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  76. itching or rash.  Also, if your condition does not improve or seems to be
  77. getting worse, you should contact your doctor.

  79. INTERACTIONS
  80.  
  81.      1. Sucralfate may prevent the absorption of tetracycline, digoxin,
  82. phenytoin, ranitidine, and fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) from
  83. the gastrointestinal tract.  At least one hour should separate doses of any of
  84. these medications and sucralfate.
  85.      2. Sucralfate may increase stomach absorption of ciprofloxacin and
  86. norfloxacin.  At least two hours should separate doses of these medications
  87. and sucralfate.
  88.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  89. taking, especially any listed above.

  91. WARNINGS
  92.  
  93.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  94. any medications, especially to sucralfate.
  95.      * Tell your doctor if you now have or if you have ever had kidney
  96. disease.
  97.      * If sucralfate makes you dizzy or drowsy, do not take part in any
  98. activity that requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating
  99. potentially dangerous machinery.
  100.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although sucralfate
  101. appears to be safe, extensive studies in pregnant women have not been
  102. conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is
  103. not known whether sucralfate passes into breast milk.
